WGBH Mourns a Young FriendJared Nathan, Zoom cast member WGBH joins fans of our hit children's series Zoom in mourning the tragic death on Dec. 28, 2006, of Jared Nathan, a cast member in the series' 19992000 season. The 21-year-old Juilliard student was at home in Nashua, N.H., on winter break when the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a tree and overturned. Jared died at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua. "Jared was a wonderful person charismatic, a team player, and a quiet leader," recalls WGBH's Kate Taylor, executive producer of Zoom. "We weren't looking for acting talent his kind of snuck up on us. If he hadn't entered adolescence, we would have loved to have had him back for additional seasons. He had a fabulous sense of humor." "I'm optimistic, smart, and outgoing," the then 13-year-old told his fans on the Zoom Web site. "When I grow up, I'd love to be a movie director and make blockbuster films." Jared discovered the skills of tongue rolling and ventriloquism during Zoom tapings at WGBH's Boston studios. He had performed with the Peacock Players in Nashua and with the Portsmouth, N.H., Seacoast Repertory Theater. At Juilliard, he was a third-year acting student. Produced by WGBH through 2005, Zoom was a favorite with 5- to 11-year-old PBS Kids viewers and with their parents, who remember the original "by kids, for kids" hit from the 1970s, which popularized Ubbi Dubbi along with WGBH's "0-2-1-3-4" zip code. Some public TV stations continue to air the series, which features a multiracial cast who do activities based on suggestions sent in by viewers from science experiments to musical performances. WGBH is collecting comments from people across the country touched by this loss and sending them to Jared's family. Share your thoughts.
